Awareness Ribbon Mosaic Crochet Square
Mosaic crochet
is a fun way to create really interesting shapes & texture in a crochet
project, however it can be confusing to read the graph charts. My goal is to
help this all make sense to even beginning crocheters, however it does help if
you have some experience with recognizing stitches and stitching terms.
A bit about what
mosaic crochet is: It only consists of 2 types of stitches – either a back loop
sc, or a front loop dc directly below the stitch you would normally work into
but 2 rows down into the same color. Usually there are 2 colors of yarn used.
Doing a blsc reveals the color from the previous row & doing an fldc stitch
will cover the color in the previous row. This technique creates areas of the
background in one color as well as the featured design in the other color. You
will have to fasten off after every row, so at the end, you will have that
“bonus fringe” on both sides of the finished square. Each new row is always
started on the right side so that you’re looking at the front of your work. In
a mosaic graph chart, wherever there is an empty square, (no matter what color
that square is on the chart) you do a back loop sc into the stitch. If the
square has an X, you do a front loop dc directly under the stitch, but 2 rows
down, which is usually the same color as what is on your hook. Sc’s are always
in the back loop (other than the starting & ending sc), and the dc’s are
always in the front loop 2 rows down. So X = DC & blank square = SC. That’s
it in a nutshell!
This pattern
will create a slightly rectangular square approximately 13.5” x 13” (using
worsted weight 4 yarn & 5.5 mm hook) with “bonus” fringe on the sides due
to the method used in mosaic crochet. You can create multiple squares for a
blanket, or create 2 for a pillow or satchel, or 1 for a place mat or other
décor.
There is a bonus
chart for a smaller square at the very bottom of this page.
The yarn you use
for this square can be any yarn weight that you have, just be sure they are
both the same weight, and use the suggested hook. If using weight #4 yarn with
a 5.5 mm hook, this pattern will create a square that is 13” by 13.5”.
This pattern
includes written instructions row by row, as well as a graph chart at the end
if you are more comfortable working from that, as well as for visual reference.
If you work from the chart, it is very handy to have a ruler or paper strip to
place above the row you are working. The chart I have created is a little
different from others in that it has 4 colors: The typical colors of medium
blue for the A color & white for the B color, but I also have light blue
for any stitches in the A rows that will be covered by a fldc in the next row,
as well as grey squares in the B rows that will also be covered. I did this
more for my designing process but thought that it may be helpful in working
through the pattern.
Sometime there
is confusion with the color you see on the chart & which stitch you are
supposed to use – just remember that no matter what color is on the chart, if
you see an X, do a fldc, and if the square is blank, do a blsc. There are a few
squares with orange arrows to indicate that those fldc’s are angled out to
another stitch, which will also be explained further in the written
instructions.

- SC's at start and end of rows can hide - be sure to start/end into previous row's SC and not into the 2nd or 50th stitch. (there should always be 51 stitches total for every row)
- Remember to
ALWAYS start each row on the right side (as opposed to left side)
- On chart, focus
on whether there's an X or not - don't get confused by color of square
- SC's are always
in the back loop (except start & end st) / DC's are always in the front loop
- DC's NEVER should
go in opposite color - check pattern again if you come across this!
- SC's will always
be the stitch if you are stitching into a DC of opposite color in previous row
- Front loops of
sc's can hide with doing DC from 2 rows up - lay flat & count from end to help
- Count! Count! Count! - especially first few rows when getting
started. If you find that you
are off, check to be sure you didn’t skip a hidden stitch, or you didn’t do 2 stitches
into one loop (this can happen often!)
- If
you forget which row you are on, count the ending tails on the Left side
(remember to not include the beginning tail from the chain row)
- Before cutting
yarn at end of row, double check # of X's in that row on
the chart to match
up to your stitches you just did. Counting stitches is your friend!
- Leave
a 3-4" tail of yarn at end of row in case you need to frog out & redo
that row. (you will usually notice mistakes when you are 2-4 rows above)
Yarn type/yardages
Any type of
yarn is fine. I used weight 4, with a 5.5 hook. This takes approximately 4 oz
total of weight 4 yarn.
Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
blsc = back loop sc
fldc = front loop double crochet (always in 2 rows down, into front loop of
same color)
fo = fasten off
Pattern:
(every
row will have 51 stitches total)
Starting with White, Chain 52, turn. Starting from 2nd chain from
hook, do sc in every chain.

Charts: You will find the main chart over
the next 2 pages. In making the images big enough to print out, it had to be
spread over 2 pages, otherwise it would have been very small & harder to
read. There is also a bonus chart for a small square on the very last page.
BONUS CHART!!
This creates almost a
quarter size square of the previous pattern. I didn’t include the beginning
& ending sc’s as this is meant as a repeat. Be sure to start the row out
with a beginning sc as usual, repeat the pattern as many times as needed, then
end with an ending sc. Continue as many rows as needed.
